Interview : PERFORMER

Lumen 23f/w season starts with the title "performer".
In the Winter collection, you can take a close look at other people's everyday lives.
It contains the image of an actor exploring his inner self.

The main character who shared the story of the performer is actor Joo Joo-young.

LUMEN

What made you become an actor?

Inyoung

I didn't major in acting. While thinking about my career path during my normal college life, I tried to become an exchange student. Then, by chance, I saw a sitcom on TV. I really liked seeing a family sharing various emotions in a sitcom. I wanted to be with them, even as an actor. So, instead of becoming an exchange student, I decided to take a leave of absence and enrolled in an acting academy.

While learning acting, I felt that I was very closed off to my emotions and as I learned how to express my emotions, I gradually lost interest in acting.

LUMEN

Are there important elements in acting other than facial expressions and words?

Inyoung

Since my major was not acting, I worked on set with little preparation. There I was advised to move my body a lot. So I started working out and learning a variety of things, including boxing, Pilates, and yoga. As I used my body, my mental composure also increased.

LUMEN

What is the process and method of familiarizing yourself with Inyoung’s script?

Inyoung

When I receive a script, I read it alone at home without any emotions. many times. I definitely think I can learn the script faster if I get along well with my partner during on-site rehearsals.
For phrases that don't stick well, talking to the director based on your own interpretation is very helpful in accepting and understanding the story.

LUMEN

I don’t think it will be easy to immerse yourself in a ‘role (other person)’ in a work that is different from the ‘self’ in real life.

Inyoung

I did that with my most recent project, which was a short film.
It's about sisters trying to control their emotions in their own ways after losing their mother, who was fighting an illness. Actually, I have a calm personality, but that applies to my family as well.

I was concerned that my personality was a bit blunt and not very likable compared to the character, so I had a lot of conversations with the director and tried to focus on my role.

And from the moment you enter the scene, you start to feel emotions that you never felt in real life. At this time, I felt like I had become someone other than my original self. It's difficult to immerse yourself in your role at every moment, but it's always amazing to see how you can do something in the atmosphere and environment created with the help of the staff and co-stars on set.

LUMEN

As an actor, how do you feel about working on each project?

Inyoung

(It varies depending on the work) I like to feel a sense of life and stability when watching a movie, so I hope the audience feels this way when they watch the works I appear in.

For example, on days when it's hard to wake up in the morning and you feel particularly lethargic, you may gain energy by watching the main character in a movie go about his diligent and lively daily life. I want to breathe in works that show people living lives full of things that may seem like nothing, but are actually nothing. It would be even better if it had a relatable message or a deep story.

LUMEN

Is there anything special you do to get inspired?

Inyoung

I don't look at art for the sole purpose of inspiration. Rather, I am inspired by small things in everyday life. At the end of the day, I like to have a drink alone at the end.
(Everyone laughs)

Ordinary daily life, such as watching a movie while drinking beer or whiskey, writing in a diary, talking on the phone with a friend, listening to the radio, etc.

LUMEN

I’m also curious about Inyoung’s daily life. What do you usually wear, what is your favorite bag style?

Inyoung

As for clothing... I used to often wear boxier, more comfortable clothes. But these days, a feminine style doesn't necessarily mean I'm uncomfortable or cause attention, so I try out a variety of styles.

And, I usually like big, clunky bags. (Pointing to the journal bag) I like this product (laughter).

LUMEN

How would you define a performer (actor, spouse, person who performs)?

Inyoung

shower? Regardless of whether it is intentional or not, you have to act while being aware of the fact that someone will ‘see’ you, but it is difficult to show good acting right away under the circumstances. Isn’t the role of a performer to show that difficult task naturally and beautifully?
